House Update 8/26

Megan perched in one of the living room windows last week.

All kinds of good things afoot!

Today I had a 10am meeting with Mr. Cabinet, so of course I brought along my camera to get a few shots of the progress.

(N.B. For those thoroughly disinterested in photos of the innards of my house, I completely understand.  You might want to skip to the last photo to see a shot of what our cupboards will look like though!)

In the first shot (below), a little over a week ago, you can still see through the office out into the back yard.  The office floor was poured, but there were no windows yet, and the new trusses look great.

This morning when Laurent and I pulled up to the house, we had trouble finding a parking place as there were about four vehicles there already!  We passed a roaring generator as we wove our way up the driveway between a large pickup truck and the dumpster, and noted the power tools out in the front yard.  All good signs.  Inside the house, there was banging and clatter and guys yelling to be heard.  The Electrician was there and immediately wanted me to tell him where we would like the outlets for phones and television hook up and computers.  Obviously, that is not my department so I put him on the phone with Paul, and then began walking around to snap some pics.

The first inside pic shows the wall that had me all flibbertygibbity last time I was at the house.  You see, in my mind, I had pictured no wall at the end of the breakfast bar, so that one could see all the way through the kitchen or out to the main area – it would be a very open feeling.  Then they stuck this floor to ceiling thing there, and I panicked, not knowing what I would do with that unwanted and unplanned for visual obstruction.  BUT, let me tell you, it is a grace in the end (as things often turn out to be) because Mr. Cabinet said he could put some base cupboards and a hutch there – a perfect location for a sort of “catch all” – which every house needs – and it will give the wall a purpose that otherwise would have eluded me.

Next pic shows what I believe will become a very wide storage closet.  We used to have one along that green wall, but it was just your average closet with storage shelves.  This will be about 3 feet wider, which will be a much needed addition since I’m taking out all the floor-to-ceiling storage cupboards along one wall of my laundry room.

Next pic shows the newly framed office, windows and door in place (we need to remind them to cut a doggy door for us too…).

Next is our new bedroom, with a window on the side wall instead of the back where it used to be.  I’m still trying to figure out what that will mean for furniture arrangement.

Next, the bathroom window went away and was replaced by just a small light window up high.  I don’t dislike it, it’s just different.  I think there will be a solar tube in the room, though, which will bring in more light.

Next is a shot of the front bedroom with it’s beautiful new windows.  The fire marshal no longer allows the security grills like the wrought iron we had over the front windows before, so that will make it just  a tiny bit brighter.

And lastly and most importantly, my new cabinets will be sooooo pretty!  I am very happy with them, they are alder wood and I had several styles and colors from which to choose.  The warm reddish tones are exactly what I wanted, and we will have the same cabinets throughout the house.  I’m starting to be able to visualize how it will all come together, and it doth make me happy indeed.

  1. Nettie! It’s looking good (from what my inexperienced eye can tell)! I can’t imagine all of the decisions you’re having to make day in and day out, but I bet it’s nice to have choices. It’s a bit similar to a forest fire: out of the char a beautiful new forest grows. Your house is “growing” up again! =)

  2. Even with your explanations above…I had trouble figuring out what was where!
