The Hollow Crown: Richard II

The Hollow Crown: Richard II

One lovely gift to our family from my Shakespeare-loving little brother this Christmas was the DVD set The Hollow Crown – a BBC mini-series of adaptations of Shakespeare’s history plays: Richard II, Henry IV Parts One and Two, and Henry V.  We watched Richard II as a family, and I was riveted, partly because I am fascinated by the characters, the history, the treacheries and regrets; and partly because I was wonderfully transported by the cinematography, and the performances – most especially the unexpectedly mesmerizing Ben Wishaw as the overthrown Richard II.

I’m greatly looking forward to Jeremy Irons and Tom Hiddleston in the upcoming Henry IV and V.  Thanks, Doug, for the marvelous gift!
