The End of an Era

The End of an Era

For many, many years (in fact, for me, as long as I’ve been married – for my husband, longer), we have received a precious gift each holiday season: One ice-cream bucket filled with the thinnest, most delicate cut-out sugar cookies, intricately iced and decorated in Thanksgiving and Christmas themes.  This very special traditional treat has been produced for decades by a talented and dedicated lady in Fairmont, MN.  Her work has been truly epic in scale and legendary in the area.  She has been slowing down in recent years, cutting back on her production as her strength waned.  This year, we were the recipients of her final batch of cookies.  She is in hospice, and will soon go to her reward.  Therefore, it was with both joy, and solemnity, that we opened our final ice-cream bucket of holiday cookies after dinner tonight, each of us taking just one.  We will savor these as long as we can, and give thanks for the Cookie Lady and her many years of bringing joy to both our family, and her community.  May the Lord bless her and gather her to himself in his most perfect time.
