Jacob was taking the trash out late one night last week, and saw this critter scuttling about in the dark on the edges of the front yard lights. He came in exclaiming there was a bug “as big as my foot!” out there, and of course we had to come see if that was remotely accurate. Laurent grabbed an ice cream bucket on the way out, and when we found it she plopped the bucket over the top.
The next question was how to over turn the bucket and keep the bug inside. So Jacob ran back inside and found the first piece of paper he saw, a messed up print out of Cantate Domino. Laurent slipped it under the edge of the bucket, but we still couldn’t figure out how to flip the bucket without the bug flipping out. Finally she just lifted the bucket off the paper while shining the light on the bug, and it sat perfectly still as though posing for the camera.
Well, it turned out to be not quite as big as Jacob’s foot, but at 3 measures long, it was pretty darned awfully huge! After examining this marvelous entomological specimen and taking some pix, we flipped him off the paper and into the darkness where he was no doubt greatly relieved to be left alone. Thanks to Jacob’s good eyesight and inquisitiveness — Who knew late-night bug hunts could be such fun?!
