Longtime visitors to Nettie’s World will no doubt be unsurprised by the revelation that the Heidmann Clan likes target practice. We’ve been practicing with our small bore rifles, our handguns, and our big game rifle on ranges, on the range, and some of us have even done a little competitive shooting.
One thing we have never tried though, until now, is bow and arrow. It was Wednesday night that Paul no sooner arrived home than he took off with some girls and went on a bow hunt. It ended up being a real hunt too, as the first place he went, Cabela’s at our end of the valley, did not have what he was looking for, so he had to get across town to Bass Pro before they closed if he was going to come home victorious.
Upshot — after more than three hours, the hunters did return triumphant, with not one, but TWO new Bear Archery Outbreak Compound Bows, and arrows and tips to get us started. Dad’s (his alone, as long as, at 50-60lbs, he is the only one strong enough to draw it), is called the Encounter, while the “kid bow” with a draw weight of 15-60 pounds, is called the Apprentice-2.
On Friday evening just before sunset, we all drove over to an archery range at a nearby park to get the sights lined up and, “give it a shot.”

After only a spur-of-the-moment, not-yet-knowing-what-we’re-doing-but-having-a-ball-together-anyway hour at the range, we have reached a general consensus:
