This morning I took mother to an appointment that was months – nay, years – overdue.  I took her to see an optometrist.  This has been sitting on the back burner since before the whole foot thing started early in the spring of 2012, and one thing after another kept it there.  In that space of time, her sight has deteriorated even further, to the point that she reads from her Kindle tablet and computer better without her glasses than with them (and that’s not saying much).

Well, finally!  We got the appointment set up, and actually got this ball rolling.  Megan came along to be our driver, and when we got there, the waiting area was pretty crammed, so we left mum inside and sat out in a courtyard area in the entry of the building.  With one thing and another it took a bit over an hour for her to finish with all the various tests.  I went back in when I thought she was going to be about finished and entertained myself trying on different frames.  I was pretty jazzed about one pair of horn rims… never thought I could wear them before, but these I definitely loved.

Finally the doc brought her out and left her with instructions to bring to the desk.  The upshot of today’s appointment left us rather hanging.  While he did write a new prescription for her eyes, he also was able to determine that she has both diabetic retinopathy and the beginnings of cataracts.  He cautioned that it would be sensible to wait to buy new eye wear until after she sees the ophthalmologist, who can better determine how to proceed with treatment, since the new prescription wont really do her much good until she deals with the other two issues.

So that is where we stand for the moment…. awaiting our ophthalmologist appointment at the end of the month, ever hopeful that it will bring clarity of all sorts!
