Lenten Wednesdays always have a little festivity about them, thanks to the wonderful organization of St. Vincent de Paul and their Lent Soup Suppers at church. This Wednesday was the first soup supper for this year, and we had to arrive early enough so Paul could assist with set up. That meant leaving the house at 3:45, and having Laurent and the MoezArtians meet us there when they were finished with theater. It was a splendid repast with something like 20 different crock pots of stew and chili and soups of all kinds. While visiting with my friend Laura, it was revealed that her son Peter (Jacob’s best buddy) was off to play laser tag with his Boy Scout troop at 7, and she wondered if Jacob would like to go too, and then come spend the night with them. Well obviously that was a big YES! Since my evening event (choir practice) started at 7:30, while she had to have her younger kids to RE by 6:45, we agreed that I would take them over there and drop them off. I must say, it was an odd feeling for me to walk out of the building, leaving The Boy behind with his friend, eagerly scoping out the arcade games as they waited for the rest of the troop to arrive. I had no idea if he would like it, or if the whole thing would be too much for him. I wont say I needn’t have worried, but I will say that he had nothing but raves about the entire event.

In addition to the Soup Suppers, following the Lenten practice of meatless Fridays has inspired my wonderful husband to want to produce another monster batch of soup – this one without the sausage, just lots of vegetables. So, after he went with Megan to pick Jeff up from work (his roofless car is a royal pain in the winter when it’s wet, so I drove him to work this morning to save him the freezing ride and a wet behind all day), they came home laden with grocery bags filled with fabulous fresh produce, beautiful to the eye. It was, as it always is with my husband, a ridiculously large quantity, filling my entire counter, and I made him let me do my picture thing before he and the girls had at it with their sharp knives and food processor and their boom box for accompaniment. The onion juice is still hanging in the air and making my eyes smart, and I wasn’t even the one doing the peeling!
We will indubitably have vegetable stew enough to last us through the rest of Lent.
