It is a long standing tradition, starting way back when Grandma and Grandpa first moved down to the Valley, that every other weekend they would have the grandchildren come for an “overnight” – one or two nights on the weekend at their place. One week it would be the “west end” cousins, and the next the Heidmann kiddos from the “east end”.
My older kids recall those weekends with so much fondness – cartoons in the morning (we never let them do that at home!), Jeopardy with Grandpa in the evening, time spent fishing in the Sun Lakes with Grandpa, playing Canasta, riding bikes around the lakes, and of course Grandma’s special cuisine – “Octopus” with Mac & Cheese, and her famous sandwiches with everything healthy in the middle.
Even though Grandpa is with Jesus now, Grandma still continues the tradition. Every other week we send a couple of kids over to her place, and on the in between weekends she is visited by some of her older grand-things. Thus we are afforded many opportunities to gather at her home when we go pick up our pair on Sundays after mass.
On this particular Sunday in May, we had Megan, Andy and little Patrick there as well, so it was extra special. My grandson is obviously the cutest thing on two legs and I can’t get enough pics. Ever.
