Shakespeare in the back yard

We’re all delirious at Casa de Heidmann
in anticipation of the start
of the new semester of Theater.
The walls are resounding with Shakespearean verse,
both watching and rehearsing.
I found Megan practicing her performance for a while
in the old gazebo out back.
Here she recites Katharina’s monologue from Act IV, scn. III
of
Taming of the Shrew:

KATHARINA

The more my wrong, the more his spite appears:
What, did he marry me to famish me?
Beggars, that come unto my father’s door,
Upon entreaty have a present alms;
If not, elsewhere they meet with charity:
But I, who never knew how to entreat,
Nor never needed that I should entreat,
Am starved for meat, giddy for lack of sleep,
With oath kept waking and with brawling fed:
And that which spites me more than all these wants,
He does it under name of perfect love;
As who should say, if I should sleep or eat,
‘Twere deadly sickness or else present death.
I prithee go and get me some repast;
I care not what, so it be wholesome food.

Meanwhile, Geneva prepares to deliver the dramatic
missive of Orsino’s love to the exquisite Olivia, found in Act I scn. V
of
Twelfth Night:

VIOLA
Make me a willow cabin at your gate,
And call upon my soul within the house;
Write loyal cantons of contemned love
And sing them loud even in the dead of night;
Halloo your name to the reverberate hills
And make the babbling gossip of the air
Cry out ‘Olivia!’ O, You should not rest
Between the elements of air and earth,
But you should pity me!

I homeschooled four kids all the way through high school and then fostered/adopted 7 more children. I am wife to a very smart mathematician; I dabble in photography, write and sing, paint in bright colors, and love being Catholic!

  1. This looks like such GREAT fun! Both seem to have a flair for Shakespear!!!!

    1. There’s *plenty* to work with, that’s for certain! 😀

  2. I love that version of Twelfth Night. Now I want to watch it again. Glad your girls are getting into Shakespeare! Our Literary Society book for this month is The Merchant of Venice.

    1. I actually proposed that one of the girls use something from MOV for their audition piece, but they both seem to have settled in to their more comedic characters. Good play, that… I remember how much I enjoyed it in high school…

  3. Shakespeare…woohoo. My youngest found his wings as Puck..:)
