For our family, Spring Break began after school on Friday, the 13th. It was a little different than the norm, in that the kids thought it was their spring break that was beginning, but actually it was mine. Paul picked them all up from school and drove straight to the ranch, albeit slowly and very carefully through the mountains in the rain and snow. Meanwhile, I stayed at home and began what became a very, very restful three day weekend alone. Technically I wasn’t alone, as mom and Jeff were around, but I basically saw no one and napped a LOT all weekend, and it was glorious and greatly needed and appreciated.
In any case, Paul took some Pixel 2 pics of their weekend up north and I experienced the fun vicariously by editing his snaps.
It was while they were up north that school closings began spreading, and our spring break was extended an extra week. That is the official status for now, but it’s anyone’s guess when we will really return to on campus classes. In the meantime, we are taking it fairly easy this week with only a few reading and summarizing assignments, but mostly just enjoying vacation. Nobody needs the extra stress of serious home schooling right now. Next week, we’ll do a little more together, and play it by ear as we go forward. We are in a pretty good position in terms of resources already in hand, and I’ve seen a flurry of activity online with homeschoolers posting advice and encouragement and links to help those for whom this is new. My advice is the same as everyone else: take it easy on yourself, if you’re starting this path for the first time. Read together, let your kids explore their interests, and take your time finding your family’s groove. It will be ok! You can do this – especially with the amount of information you can find online today. The “hive mind” can be a beautiful thing!
