I have been thinking about posting since Thursday. Actually I was thinking about this post since before Thursday… we have known for a few weeks that a big layoff was coming at General Dynamics, and we knew what day it was going down. Paul’s back-channel source had kept him apprised of the ever-changing status, and he knew that the list of names was changing daily, so there was always that slightest chance that he would not be on it come Thursday. However, he was prepared, and every day this week he brought a few of his things home from his cubicle, so that by Thursday morning, he had no more personal belongings at his desk. When the HR guy came to escort him down to receive his walking papers, he grabbed his badge and his keys and said goodbye to his cubicle for the last time. When he was finished in HR, they were going to escort him back to pick up his things and he just said, “That’s alright, I’m already cleared out. I knew this was coming.” He was one of maybe two people that did.
Since then, he has been applying for new jobs daily online, talking to head-hunters, and has had a very good phone interview which may lead to a final on site interview. Unfortunately, that job is in California. It would mean either moving the family to CA (not going to happen) or he would have to live there during the week and come home on weekends. It’s not our first choice. But we don’t always get to choose, do we?
Anyway, we are adjusting to a new reality now… the fun bit is having my husband around more. 🙂 The tricky part is being more careful with our spending. We are trusting the Lord to care for us, as he always has.
Jeremiah 29:11 — “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

4 Jun 2011There are SOME nice people in California! :-). What city? Maybe it was in The Plans?

4 Jun 2011I know there are, Jill! 🙂 But when it comes to taxes and homeschooling laws, Arizona is so much better. Plus there’s our church… plus there are people with whom we are inextricably linked… so, we’ll just have to see what God is going to do.

4 Jun 2011Oh my goodness! What a thing to have to deal with on the heels of your fire disaster! We will be praying double hard for you now, and that Paul will get a job that won’t require him to commute to another state!

4 Jun 2011Thanks Linda! There’s never a dull moment around here… 😀

It sounds like y’all have a really good attitude about this whole thing. But, then again, it wouldn’t do any good to have a bad one, would it? 🙂

5 Jun 2011Thanks for stopping by, Mary! I agree – doesn’t do any good to mope. And considering all things – fire, job loss – we are still so richly blessed. Our prayers are truly with those who are suffering greatly, with the tremendous tornado devastation as well as the disaster in Japan.

5 Jun 2011Hi Nettie, I found you on the CMO list and I am stopping by to say hello. I’m sorry to hear that your husband was laid off from work. My own husband was made redundant just over 2 years ago. Yes, we had to adjust too. We did enjoy having my husband at home and spending time with us but he needed an income, rewarding work to do, a place in society… Well, God is so good. he went back to university and studied for his Masters in Teaching and now is an employed primary school teacher. He no longer goes out to a job each day that he doesn’t really enjoy. I hope and pray that things work out as well for you. We know God has everything in hand but still it can be a difficult situation. God bless!

5 Jun 2011Sue, thanks so much for stopping by, and for those encouraging words. What a neat testimony to God’s faithfulness. He is faithful again and again, isn’t he?! His plans are always good. We simply await their revelation!

8 Jun 2011Oh my, I’m so sorry to hear this. I just got home from visiting some friends in NJ and am getting caught up to myself. Any company would be so lucky to have Paul on their team I’m sure! I’ll be praying for a good solution, and a timely revelation of that solution.
Btw, do you know Lorraine Hunt Lieberson’s singing? She was this incredible mezzo that started as a violist, and the only connection to your story is that she came from CA! Her voice has been haunting me since I stumbled across it earlier this week as I’m preparing a music appreciation class for next winter called The Art of Listening. When I heard her I thought you needed to know her singing if you did not.

8 Jun 2011Thanks so much for those prayers, Michelle! God is working out his good will for us… There have been several good interviews, and Paul continues to field calls from head hunters several times a day. And I will absolutely check out Lorraine Hunt Lieberson! Can’t wait to hear a fellow violist and mezzo! 🙂
