Scenes From a Day

A Tuesday like any other, filled with variety.
First things first, a jaunt to the orthodontist with Geneva,
after which we drove through a car wash with Oma’s lovely green minivan,
which has been carrying around an increasingly insufferable load of Arizona dirt,
and now is once again restored to its proper shine and glory.

Thereafter school commenced,
with History, Great Books, Art, and –
because the Mother Unit (that would be me)
had enough of tip-toeing around 8,000 legos on her living room floor,
and wouldn’t allow them to be transferred to the dining room table,
some outdoor work on the venerable Venator.

It’s coming along…

Jacob and Geneva were sent off to his room to read poetry to each other.
Here is Jacob reading,
at a remarkable clip,
a very amusing poem entitled,

Too Many Daves
by
Dr. Seuss

Did I ever tell you that Mrs. McCave
Had twenty-three sons and she named them all Dave?
Well, she did.  And that wasn’t a smart thing to do.
You see, when she wants one and calls out, “Yoo-Hoo!
Come into the house, Dave!” she doesn’t get one.
All twenty-three Daves of hers come on the run!
This makes things quite difficult at the McCaves,
As you can imagine, with so many Daves.
And often she wishes that, when they were born,
She had named one of them Bodkin Van Horn
And one of them Hoos-Foos. And one of them Snimm.
and one of them Hot-Shot.  And one Sunny Jim.
And one of them Shadrack.  And one of them Blinkey.
And one of them Stuffy.  And one of them Stinkey.
Another one Putt-Putt.  Another one Moon Face.
Another one Marvin O’Gravel Balloon Face.
And one of them Ziggy.  And one Soggy Muff.
One Buffalo Bill.  And one Biffalo Buff.
And one of them Sneepy.  And one Weepy Weed.
And one Paris Garters. And one Harris Tweed.
And one of them Sir Michael Carmichael Zutt
And one of them Oliver Boliver Butt
And one of them Zanzibar Buck Buck McFate…
But she didn’t do it.  And now it’s too late.

Megan studying the Poloponnesian War
(and doing touch-ups on a character drawing for her novel)

Laurent in her online class,
discussing the Beatitudes…
(they were supposed to discuss the Apocalypse of John, but clearly that subject will require at least a full class of its own).
Next on their schedule are books 1-8 of
Confessions (St. Augustine!)

~*~*~*~*~

After school hours, I proposed a drive-about for the purpose of enjoying the shinyness of the clean minivan.
The first stop was Wal-mart, where Megan wanted to buy herself some leggings:

The perfect addition to any young lady’s wardrobe.
While she and Laurent were inside
(Laurent had to buy herself some more blue yarn)
we drove
around
and
around
in the parking lot,
until I happened to drive down a row where I saw

a black Challenger.
I circled it slowwwwwly, drinking it in from every angle.
My mother shakes her head.
She does not understand me.
But she says I am like my dad.
🙂

After Wal-mart
(I was loathe to leave that car behind…)
we drove home via a circuitous route,
taking a detour through the Stadium complex to show mother
the sights.

Back home again, Laurent set up shop immediately with her yarn to work on whatever that crafty project is she has going (I think it may be a purse).
She was amused to notice that she was wearing white and blue,
crocheting with white and blue yarn,
and wearing white and blue nail polish on her fingernails.
She’s quite consistent in her likes!

Laurent and Jacob have brought the
“8,000 legos” back to the
living room,
and are on the home stretch – Jacob is determined
to finish the Venator tonight.

  1. Hey! This was a most interesting day….and the little trip through the area around the Stadium was really cool to see….I had only been around the EXTERIOR of the area previously…so now I have the “full picture”! AND….that venerable VENATOR space ship is amazing! I have had a demonstration showing most of its’ special features….with Laurent assisting in the display!

  2. Thank you so much for “Too Many Daves.” I couldn’t contain my giggles as I read it aloud to myself. It made me think of my friend Marianne, who really liked the name David and would have named her son David if her father-in-law’s family, which had something over a dozen children, had not used David as the middle name for every single child, including the last one: David David. I’m serious!
Thrilling to think of Laurent encountering The Confessions of St. Augustine already at her tender age. I was much older before I read it, and it has been an important text for me. I commissioned a three movement piece using texts from it a couple of years ago, and my final degree recital was entitled Confessions, including that piece and modeled after the book from birth to eternal rest. It was one of the most satisfying programs I’ve ever done. My favorite section is in Book 10, Sero te amavi… Late have I loved you, Beauty so ancient and so new, late have I loved you…
I’ve added my prayers to many others for a good solution to your car dilemma.

    1. Michelle, that is hilarious. I laughed out loud! 😀

I agree about the Confessions – I was telling Laurent today “You are so lucky!” 😀 Perhaps that sounds a little like praising myself for putting her in this program… but in reality, I was wistfully imagining how marvelous it would have been to study these great works in my teens! What a treasure and foundation. As it is, I will be reading along with her this week!

I would dearly love to have heard that program…. have you any recordings? I’m willing to pay large sums of money to acquire copies! 🙂

Also, thank you much for the prayers. We have gotten a bit of money from the insurance company and will hopefully be able to pick up a new/used commuter car for Paul this weekend. There aren’t too many cars in our price range and that have good gas mileage, so shopping shouldn’t take that long!

  3. My favorites are:
    “…And one Harris Tweed.
And one of them Sir Michael Carmichael Zutt
And one of them Oliver Boliver Butt
And one of them Zanzibar Buck Buck McFate…”

(The picture caught me gasping into the blanket in a vain attempt to breath past the giggles.) ;D
