Night Time

11:30pm

I’m just getting ready to shut down my computer for the night.
The Boy marches out of his room,
approaches me, mournful, apologetic, yet utterly alert,
and declares,
“I am not tired.
I am so not tired,
I will not be able to sleep for at least three hours.”

Unfortunately, we’ve been through this countless times.
I know that this is not much of an exaggeration.

We’ve tried medication… he says it makes him dizzy.
We’ve tried melatonin drops.
They don’t seem to affect him.
We’ve tried heavy blankets to give him a sense of security,
and fans to block other noises…
those work,
as long as he is tired enough to begin with.

I suggest he do some jumping jacks, sit-ups, and push-ups.

He paces for a while.

I leave the room,
and return to find him here:



Reading a Star Wars book… for this, he can sit still.

The diet coke I did not give him… he nabbed that on his own.
Since caffeine settles him down, I’m sure he figured it would be fine with me.
I am off to make him some green tea instead.
After that, we’ll give the sleeping thing another try.

  1. And???? Did green tea do the trick??? Hope so!

  2. Eventually, all boys fall asleep. I think the green tea played a part, and we were both able to rest our weary heads around 1’ish. Not all nights are the same, thankfully… I just wish I could bottle the recipe for those days when he crawls into bed at 9:30 or 10 and sleeps through the night…

  3. Does he need more exercise during the day? Hope you are able to keep up with him after those late nights!
