October at the Ranch 2014 — Part 1

October at the Ranch 2014 — Part 1

Our annual Halloween weekend at the Ranch began with a largely uneventful drive north on Thursday evening, after Laurent and Megan finished work at the school.  We had everything packed and ready to go, and picked the girls up on our way out of town. The journey was marred only by my lack of night vision, though I managed (possibly stupidly) to tough it out through the Salt River Canyon and all the way to Show Low before I handed the wheel over to Laurent.  We arrived exhausted and collapsed into our sleeping bags close to midnight.

It was, therefore, astounding that I managed to wake up early enough Friday morning to do something I’ve been longing to do for many months — capture the sunrise.  It was worth the short night to witness the grandeur of God masterfully painting the heavens with glory at 5:30 a.m.!  The colors were so brilliant, I couldn’t improve on them if I tried with any photo editing software.

It was chilly in the morning air, but the kids found a couple of “Grandpa hats” for the little boys to wear, which they LOVED as they ran up and down the hills. Meanwhile, the big boys kept warm in the cabin fooling around on my old phone, which Jacob tried to resurrect to use for playing Angry Birds. I asked them for a smile, and they both instinctively made faces at me. I love boys.

I homeschooled four kids all the way through high school and then fostered/adopted 7 more children. I am wife to a very smart mathematician; I dabble in photography, write and sing, paint in bright colors, and love being Catholic!
