If you enter the words “photo challenge” into Google search, and you will find not only dozens – more like hundreds – of different photo challenges, you will also find some tremendously inspiring work by photographers, both amateur and professional. I have always stayed away from these for a couple of reasons: one, I just don’t think I’m creative. And what’s the point of joining one of these things if you can’t do anything unique with the assignment? Two, I greatly chafe under the constraints of an “assignment”! “What do you mean, I have to take a picture of a hat today? Why can’t I take a picture of a flower if I want? What if my best photo today happens to be a still life, or my lunch?”
Well, when a young friend recently posted a June Photo Challenge on Facebook, I made a snap decision that I knew I might regret, and said I would jump on board that train. So far I have “mostly” colored inside the lines, though I strayed one day (wait, I did that two days, actually) and chose a photo from the past for the category, and another day I just couldn’t decide on one favorite so I kept three. I know I’m not creative, I’m much too literal a thinker — so I’m just working on trying some different photo-editing tricks, and making sure that I like the end product for each day. But I think I’m doing pretty well with the discipline, considering all my handicaps.
I was hesitant to post about this since I wasn’t sure I was going to be totally committed — and I still don’t know if I will be able to ride it all the way to the end of the month. But for now, I’m having some fun. Here are days 1-6.
