Thursday was the day of our
\nLONG expected party – the premier of
\nThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n

For the midnight show, there were just four of us, by my mean-mom decree.
\nUncle Jeff would GLADLY have brought the whole family;<\/p>\n

((BELIEVE me.\u00a0 It’s what he does.))<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

however, since there was a big group from SSJ planning to go altogether
\n(they even got a group discount on tickets)
\non Friday afternoon, and since immediately after that
\nall the kids were heading over to the church\u00a0for the first episode of\u00a0a 3-night
\nLord Of The Rings marathon
\nwhich will be completed Sunday evening after mass,
\nI thought that starting the weekend with an all-nighter Thursday was
\nlikely to cause between 1-4 of my offspring to crash and burn –
\nprobably just in time for Sunday morning church.<\/p>\n

And, since Jeff had 4 tickets for the midnight show,
\nand one of his friends canceled,
\nthat left me with the decidedly unenviable task of
\nchoosing ONE of my children
\nto attend with Jeff, mother, and myself.<\/p>\n

Oh, the agony,
\nthe begging,
\nthe pleading,
\nthe bargaining,
\nthe hemming,
\nthe hawing,
\nthe calculating…<\/p>\n

In the end, it came down to a coin toss.<\/p>\n

And after the coin toss, I still had to provide an unbreakable
\nseries of reasons why the coin toss
\nshould stand.<\/p>\n

The toss was between Megan and Laurent.
\nLaurent won the toss.
\nI then further explicated that:
\nShe is about to turn 18.
\nShe just finished her finals that very day.
\nShe is the goddaughter of Uncle Jeff,
\nand also the rightful heir to his extreme
\nLord Of The Rings
\ngeekery.
\n(you know, memorizing the Silmarillion and all the appendices, <\/em>
\nlearning to write Sindarin, Quenya, Tengwar, Dwarvish runes, making impossibly detailed maps a-la Tolkien… etc. etc.)<\/em><\/p>\n

All were agreed that my reasoning was flawless, although Megan was still understandably bereft at having to wait until the morrow.<\/p>\n

Thus\u00a0it was, that at roughly 9:50 on Thursday evening,
\nMother, Jeffrey, Laurent and I
\nset out
\n– in the rain –
\nfor the premier!!
\nWe reveled in the adventure, and wished we had hooded elvish cloaks from Mama Mentor<\/a>‘s sewing workshop.<\/p>\n

\nWhen he was handing his ticket to the gal as we entered,
\nshe glanced from him to the giant poster of Thorin right behind him,
\nglanced back and said,
\n“Hey, you know you kind of look like him!”<\/p>\n

It was a beautiful moment.
\nWhat more can you ask, as a bearded dude, than to be comapred to
\nThe Great
\nThorin Oakenshield?!<\/strong><\/p>\n

We arrived before the theater was even finished with the previous show, and sat out in the lobby nibbling our “supper” — which, according to Meriodoc Brandybuck, comes after “dinner”:<\/p>\n

Breakfast <\/strong><\/em>
\nSecond Breakfast
\nElevensies<\/strong><\/em>
\nLuncheon <\/strong><\/em>
\nAfternoon Tea <\/strong><\/em>
\nDinner <\/strong><\/em>
\nSupper<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

And when we were at last let into the theater, we were the first and only audience members for quite some time.
\nIt was a little depressing.
\nWe thought, “Surely Arizona Geeks aren’t so wimpy as to let a spot of rain dampen their spirits?!”
\nHowever, I think all the fun was happening nextdoor in the BIG theater where they were preparing to see the movie in it’s proper, 48fpm\/3D format.
\nI did hear quite the hullabaloo and cheering going on over there.
\nEventually, however, more of us old-school types came wandering in, and by midnight, there was a decent sized group.<\/p>\n

Nettie and Jeffy, bursting with anticipation just minutes before starting time!<\/p>\n

At last the lights dimmed, the previews finished, and those unmistakable strains of Howard Shore’s Middle Earth soundtrack began,
\nand we were off on the rollicking adventure with Bilbo, Gandalf, and the thirteen dwarves.<\/p>\n

It was all we hoped for and more.
\nThe way back stories and appendices were added was wonderful.
\nThe whole Radagast sequence *almost* makes up for leaving Tom Bombadil out of LOTR.
\nThe action, the humor, the peril, the poignance, the personalities – just so beautifully realized.<\/p>\n

Once again, Peter Jackson is a genius.<\/p>\n

And I went to see it again on Friday with the kids.<\/p>\n

And now, it’s been 24 hours, and\u00a0I’m ready to see it again.\u00a0 In 3D.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
