{"id":5006,"date":"2012-08-28T11:23:42","date_gmt":"2012-08-28T18:23:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nettiesworld.com\/?p=5006"},"modified":"2017-06-28T22:43:19","modified_gmt":"2017-06-29T05:43:19","slug":"school-and-other-excitement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/old.adoptedjoy.com\/?p=5006","title":{"rendered":"School, and other excitement&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Someone <strong>&lt;cough<a href=\"http:\/\/mamamentor.xanga.com\/\">Linda<\/a>cough&gt;<\/strong> reminded me that<br \/>\nI have been neglectful of my postings of late.<br \/>\n&#8212; Which I hadn&#8217;t really *forgotten* &#8212;<br \/>\nit&#8217;s just that I sort of had in the back of my mind that I was<br \/>\nwaiting for a certain piece of news<br \/>\nto arrive.\u00a0 <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>BUT!\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nLife continues<br \/>\nand so must blogging.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>~*~*~*~*~*~*~<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As of last week, <strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Laurent Victoria has begun her sophomore year <\/span><\/strong>at GCC, upward and onward.\u00a0 Woohoo!\u00a0 She&#8217;s taking <strong>Criminal Justice, Anthropology, Computer Information Systems<\/strong>, and more <strong>Math<\/strong> this semester.\u00a0 I&#8217;m absolutely fascinated by the direction she&#8217;s going, since I would never in a million years have thought of working in Intelligence.\u00a0 Clearly her early exposure to <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alias_%28TV_series%29\">Alias<\/a><\/em><\/strong> had an impact!! Lol!\u00a0 In addition, she&#8217;s continuing to <strong>sing in the youth choir<\/strong> for the Sunday evening mass; has joined the <strong>Cathedral Choir<\/strong>; has begun <strong>studying voice<\/strong> with the phenomenally talented <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecrawfordstudios.com\/Singer.html\">Karen Hendricks Crawford<\/a>;<\/strong> is on the <strong>Youth Council<\/strong> for the <strong>SSJ Youth group; Sacred Heart Home Educators Youth Group;<\/strong> and is a <strong>leader for ROC<\/strong> (middle school youth group).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Megan Olivia is forging ahead into her junior year,<\/span> <\/strong>with College level <strong>Biology<\/strong> and <strong>Algebra<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theologicalforum.org\/product.asp?ci=33&amp;pi=312\">History of the Church<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.excellenceinwriting.com\/\">Writing<\/a>, Russian Literature, Philosophy, Critical Thinking, VocabuLit, Art, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moezartproductions.com\/index.html\">MoezArt Theater<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Phy-Ed (workouts at the community center)<\/strong> plus her third year with the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/angelicum.net\/great-books-program\/\">Angelicum Academy Great Books Program<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 For extra-curriculars, She is on the <strong>SSJ Youth Council; Youth Group; Little Flowers; Sacred Heart Home Educators Youth Group<\/strong>; and sings in the <strong>Youth Choir<\/strong> Sunday evenings.\u00a0 Megan is also an attentive helper for her Oma, comes to all her appointments, and assists with many aspects of transportation and medical needs.\u00a0 She will also be helping with physical therapy as time goes on, learning all she can in preparation for her career in PT.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/adoptedjoy.com\/?attachment_id=5008\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5008\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 5px solid black;\" title=\"20120827_203433 copy\" src=\"http:\/\/adoptedjoy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/20120827_203433-copy-300x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a>Geneva Melody, my littlest daughter<\/span> <\/strong>((sniff-sniff)), has begun High School.\u00a0 I am bewildered and bereft.\u00a0 (Not really.) \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 But I am very proud of her and excited for her progress this Freshman year.\u00a0 She will be studying <strong>History, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theologicalforum.org\/product.asp?ci=33&amp;pi=440\">Religion<\/a>, Pre-Algebra, Earth Science, Astronomy, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.excellenceinwriting.com\/\">Writing<\/a>, Literature &#8211; Poetry, Philosophy, VocabuLit, Art, MoezArt Theater, Phy-Ed,<\/strong> <strong>Latin,<\/strong> and for extra-curriculars,<strong> SSJ Youth Choir<\/strong>; <strong>Little Flowers;<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Youth Group; Sacred Heart Home Educators Youth Group; <\/strong>and volunteering at<a href=\"http:\/\/www.svdpusa.org\/\"><strong> St. Vincent de Paul<\/strong> <\/a>with her dad, when needed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Jacob Theodore Walter Scott &#8220;The Boy&#8221; Heidmann is an 8th grader.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 This means all kinds of interesting subjects, including <strong>History, Religion, Math Fundamentals, Writing, Penmanship, Literature, Philosophy, VocabuLit, MoezArt Theater, Phy-Ed, Latin,<\/strong> and of course<strong> ROC at SSJ.\u00a0 <\/strong>Now if I could just get him to sit still we could make flying progress.<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Never mind.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the glory of homeschooling on the spectrum &#8212; we have the freedom to be &#8220;eminently flexible&#8221; (to quote our much beloved Fr. Charles Cherry).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>~*~*~*~*~*~*~<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The last two years have been so busy for us with church activities &#8212; first it was RCIA for the adults and older girls, and RE for the younger two; then last year, the younger two finishing RE and both Paul and I sponsoring new members through RCIA.\u00a0 Well, I thought for sure this year would be a chance to take a breath.\u00a0 But <strong>THANKS BE TO GOD<\/strong>, that is not the case.\u00a0 We are <em><strong>literally euphoric<\/strong><\/em> that our wonderful neighborhood family is coming into the church, including the mom and all twelve kids, ages 21 down to 3mo.\u00a0 The four oldest, 21, 20, 17 and 16, will be in RCIA this year, with Paul and I again sponsoring, and the rest of the family will be in the Family Membership class.\u00a0 Every time I think about it, I get the urge to dance a jig.\u00a0 Occasionally, I actually do.\u00a0 Next Easter is going to be <strong><em>quite the celebration!!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/adoptedjoy.com\/?attachment_id=5009\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5009\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5009 alignright\" style=\"border: 5px solid black;\" title=\"JoAnthony copy\" src=\"http:\/\/adoptedjoy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/JoAnthony-copy-450x253.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a>I mentioned the 3-month old.\u00a0 That would be <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>JoAnthony,<\/strong><\/span> and he needs special prayers. He is the most adorable little Downs baby, and he has 2 holes in his heart that need to be repaired.\u00a0 He will be having heart surgery tomorrow, and it is obviously a very difficult surgery &#8211; they wanted to wait till he was at least 10 pounds, and he&#8217;s not there yet, but they can&#8217;t wait any longer.\u00a0 Please pray for a successful surgery, skill for the surgeons, and peace and strength for JoAnn and the rest of the family.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>(If you would like to let the family know you are praying, just leave a comment below this post. Thank you so much for your kindness!\u00a0 I will post a surgery update as soon as possible.)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>~*~*~*~*~*~*~<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Our weekend was winding down on Sunday evening&#8230; Laurent and Geneva had gone to evening mass followed by gym night at SSJ.\u00a0 Megan had stayed home due to some ongoing neck pain from a pulled muscle, and we were catching Paul up on some episodes of CSI, when there was a ruckus outside in the street.\u00a0 We are used to sirens racing by because we live just down the street from the firehouse &#8211; but these didn&#8217;t race by.\u00a0 The street was filling up right outside our front yard with fire trucks and police cars and flashing red and blue lights, and we ran out to find out what was up.\u00a0 The action was all focused on our neighbors directly to the north, and we quickly learned that there was a fire that had started somewhere in the back rooms of the house &#8212; thankfully no one was inside when it happened, as they had just left before it started with the children to take them to a family member&#8217;s house.<\/p>\n<p>Memories of last year came flooding back, of the trauma and confusion, the waiting and wondering, the helpful emergency personnel, sitting outside on the sidewalk, our neighbors bringing us water and chairs, the Red Cross coming eventually to offer assistance.\u00a0 We sprang into action.\u00a0 Paul brought out some canned drinks, while Megan helped me in the kitchen.\u00a0 Jacob brought chairs out so the neighbors could sit down.\u00a0 We made some popcorn in our whirly popper, and Jeff arrived bringing a case of water.\u00a0 He then ran to Little Caesars for pizza, while I popped some cookies in to bake.\u00a0 As usual he bought more than enough, and we had enough to send some back to the firehouse with the firemen.\u00a0 It was a huge blessing to be able to offer these small tokens to a family in crisis.\u00a0 Once the firemen had left, Paul grabbed some flashlights and went over with them to help secure the house against theft.
