11:30pm<\/p>\n

I’m just getting ready to shut down my computer for the night.
\nThe Boy marches out of his room,
\napproaches me, mournful, apologetic, yet utterly alert,
\nand declares,
\n“I am not tired.
\nI am so not tired,
\nI will not be able to sleep for at least three hours.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, we’ve been through this countless times.
\nI know that this is not much of an exaggeration.<\/p>\n

We’ve tried medication… he says it makes him dizzy.
\nWe’ve tried melatonin drops.
\nThey don’t seem to affect him.
\nWe’ve tried heavy blankets to give him a sense of security,
\nand fans to block other noises…
\nthose work,
\nas long as he is tired enough to begin with.<\/p>\n

I suggest he do some jumping jacks, sit-ups, and push-ups.<\/p>\n

He paces for a while.<\/p>\n

I leave the room,
\nand return to find him here:<\/p>\n

\nReading a Star Wars<\/em><\/span> book… for this<\/em>, he can sit still.<\/p>\n

The diet coke I did not give him… he nabbed that on his own.
\nSince caffeine settles him down, I’m sure he figured it would be fine with me.
\nI am off to make him some green tea instead.
\nAfter that, we’ll give the sleeping thing another try.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
