Saturday morning we were up with our neighbor Ron’s roosters.\u00a0 I was hoping, as I wandered around in the cool shadows, to see a grand and exultant sunrise come up over the hill behind the cabin.\u00a0 However, we were in for a mostly cloudy day, and I only glimpsed a moment of sunshine before the grey curtain of shade closed again.<\/p>\n
There were a couple of hitches in our getalong this weekend, despite “not breaking down anywhere.”\u00a0 We discovered the first immediately upon entering the cabin on Friday evening.\u00a0 We’d been invaded by mice.\u00a0 Now, you have to understand – there have been no mice in that cabin in years.\u00a0 My husband did a fantastic job sealing the place up tighter than a drum.\u00a0 But the mice, they know.\u00a0 They know where the good stuff is, and you can bet that they wanted inside that cabin.\u00a0 And they looked and looked and scoured the base until they found the ONE weak spot:\u00a0 The vent for the wood stove.\u00a0 There was a plastic grate on that vent, and they chewed through it, and then through the vent hose, and voila!\u00a0 They were in!!\u00a0 And boy, did they have a good time!!\u00a0 I didn’t have the heart to try to take pictures of all that they got into.\u00a0 Suffice it to say, when we departed on Monday, there was a metal grate where the plastic had once been, and there was no food left out except the kind that kills.<\/p>\n
The other hitch was the discovery that somehow, while sitting perfectly still on the hillside and not being driven anywhere, a back tire on our suburban had exploded.\u00a0 How completely random, right?\u00a0 So, that was one other little job my husband had to do – actually, changing a tire on that soft sand is not exactly a “little” job, but he’s done it before, and one learns with practice.<\/p>\n
