In his beautiful tenor voice, he sang along with every song, on every record. One that I loved in particular was Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee. Here&#8217;s their rendition from 1962.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/73mmo53XWek?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><\/center><br \/>\nHow surprised and delighted I was to discover, as a Catholic, that the setting\u00a0I had always known\u00a0was an 1849 translation of a hymn that goes much further back, all the way to St. Bernard of Clairvaux. A few stanzas of this\u00a0hymn are\u00a0used in the Latin liturgy for the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus. Today I&#8217;m using it in honor of the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and I&#8217;m sure he wont mind.<\/p>\n<p>Here it is, in Latin, with the English translation below.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/N15RZxgIJY4?rel=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 100px;\">Jesu, dulcis memoria,<br \/>\ndans vera cordis gaudia:<br \/>\nsed super mel et omnia<br \/>\nejus dulcis praesentia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 100px;\">Nil canitur suavius,<br \/>\nnil auditur jucundius,<br \/>\nnil cogitatur dulcius,<br \/>\nquam Jesus Dei Filius.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 100px;\">Jesu, spes paenitentibus,<br \/>\nquam pius es petentibus!<br \/>\nquam bonus te quaerentibus!<br \/>\nsed quid invenientibus?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 100px;\">Nec lingua valet dicere,<br \/>\nnec littera exprimere:<br \/>\nexpertus potest credere,<br \/>\nquid sit Jesum diligere.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 100px;\">Sis, Jesu, nostrum gaudium,<br \/>\nqui es futurum praemium:<br \/>\nsit nostra in te gloria,<br \/>\nper cuncta semper saecula.<br \/>\nAmen.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 100px;\">Jesus, the very thought of Thee<br \/>\nWith sweetness fills the breast!<br \/>\nYet sweeter far Thy face to see<br \/>\nAnd in Thy Presence rest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 100px;\">No voice can sing, no heart can frame,<br \/>\nNor can the memory find,<br \/>\nA sweeter sound than Jesus&#8217; Name,<br \/>\nThe Saviour of mankind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 100px;\">O hope of every contrite heart!<br \/>\nO joy of all the meek!<br \/>\nTo those who fall, how kind Thou art!<br \/>\nHow good to those who seek!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 100px;\">But what to those who find? Ah! this<br \/>\nNor tongue nor pen can show<br \/>\nThe love of Jesus, what it is,<br \/>\nNone but His loved ones know.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 100px;\">Jesus! our only hope be Thou,<br \/>\nAs Thou our prize shalt be;<br \/>\nIn Thee be all our glory now,<br \/>\nAnd through eternity.
