Let’s have a show of hands: Who here has successfully tamed their tongue?<\/p>\n
Anyone? Bueller?<\/i><\/p>\n
Right. So all of us can thank the Apostle James for this much needed, if uncomfortably pointed, exhortation. May we heed this wisdom, and be sowers of peace.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nTaming the Tongue<\/span><\/h4>\n
<\/p>\n
3\u00a0<\/span>Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters,[a<\/a>]<\/sup> for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. <\/span>2\u00a0<\/sup>For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. <\/span>3\u00a0<\/sup>If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. <\/span>4\u00a0<\/sup>Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.<\/span>5\u00a0<\/sup>So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits.<\/span><\/p>\n

How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! <\/span>6\u00a0<\/sup>And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature,[b<\/a>]<\/sup> and is itself set on fire by hell.[c<\/a>]<\/sup> <\/span>7\u00a0<\/sup>For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, <\/span>8\u00a0<\/sup>but no one can tame the tongue\u2014a restless evil, full of deadly poison. <\/span>9\u00a0<\/sup>With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. <\/span>10\u00a0<\/sup>From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters,[d<\/a>]<\/sup> this ought not to be so. <\/span>11\u00a0<\/sup>Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? <\/span>12\u00a0<\/sup>Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters,[e<\/a>]<\/sup> yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two Kinds of Wisdom<\/span><\/h4>\n
<\/p>\n
13\u00a0<\/sup>Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. <\/span>14\u00a0<\/sup>But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth.<\/span>15\u00a0<\/sup>Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. <\/span>16\u00a0<\/sup>For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. <\/span>17\u00a0<\/sup>But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. <\/span>18\u00a0<\/sup>And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for[f<\/a>]<\/sup> those who make peace.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
