Bueller?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Right. So all of us can thank the Apostle James for this much needed, if uncomfortably pointed, exhortation. May we heed this wisdom, and be sowers of peace.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"passage-display\"><span class=\"passage-display-bcv\">James 3 <\/span><span class=\"passage-display-version\">New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (NRSVCE)<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<h4><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34575\" class=\"text Jas-3-1\">Taming the Tongue<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"chapter-1\"><span class=\"text Jas-3-1\"><span class=\"chapternum\">3\u00a0<\/span>Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters,<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; vertical-align: top; top: 0px;\" data-fn=\"#fen-NRSVCE-34575a\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NRSVCE-34575a&quot; title=&quot;See footnote a&quot;&gt;a&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=James%203&amp;version=NRSVCE#fen-NRSVCE-34575a\">a<\/a>]<\/sup> for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34576\" class=\"text Jas-3-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34577\" class=\"text Jas-3-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34578\" class=\"text Jas-3-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.<\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34579\" class=\"text Jas-3-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Jas-3-5\">How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34580\" class=\"text Jas-3-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature,<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; vertical-align: top; top: 0px;\" data-fn=\"#fen-NRSVCE-34580b\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NRSVCE-34580b&quot; title=&quot;See footnote b&quot;&gt;b&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=James%203&amp;version=NRSVCE#fen-NRSVCE-34580b\">b<\/a>]<\/sup> and is itself set on fire by hell.<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; vertical-align: top; top: 0px;\" data-fn=\"#fen-NRSVCE-34580c\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NRSVCE-34580c&quot; title=&quot;See footnote c&quot;&gt;c&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=James%203&amp;version=NRSVCE#fen-NRSVCE-34580c\">c<\/a>]<\/sup> <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34581\" class=\"text Jas-3-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34582\" class=\"text Jas-3-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>but no one can tame the tongue\u2014a restless evil, full of deadly poison. <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34583\" class=\"text Jas-3-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34584\" class=\"text Jas-3-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters,<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; vertical-align: top; top: 0px;\" data-fn=\"#fen-NRSVCE-34584d\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NRSVCE-34584d&quot; title=&quot;See footnote d&quot;&gt;d&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=James%203&amp;version=NRSVCE#fen-NRSVCE-34584d\">d<\/a>]<\/sup> this ought not to be so. <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34585\" class=\"text Jas-3-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34586\" class=\"text Jas-3-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters,<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; vertical-align: top; top: 0px;\" data-fn=\"#fen-NRSVCE-34586e\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NRSVCE-34586e&quot; title=&quot;See footnote e&quot;&gt;e&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=James%203&amp;version=NRSVCE#fen-NRSVCE-34586e\">e<\/a>]<\/sup> yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34587\" class=\"text Jas-3-13\">Two Kinds of Wisdom<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Jas-3-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34588\" class=\"text Jas-3-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth.<\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34589\" class=\"text Jas-3-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34590\" class=\"text Jas-3-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34591\" class=\"text Jas-3-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSVCE-34592\" class=\"text Jas-3-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; vertical-align: top; top: 0px;\" data-fn=\"#fen-NRSVCE-34592f\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NRSVCE-34592f&quot; title=&quot;See footnote f&quot;&gt;f&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=James%203&amp;version=NRSVCE#fen-NRSVCE-34592f\">f<\/a>]<\/sup> those who make peace.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s have a show of hands: Who here has successfully tamed their tongue?
