I was 44 years old when we entered into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. I grew up in a home steeped in bible study and scripture reading; but I was never once exposed to the books of the bible known as the Apocrypha. I am finally setting out on the adventure of exploring these books, beginning with the first chapter of the book of Sirach. Here<\/a><\/strong><\/em> is a brief introduction to the book, from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website, and below I have chosen verses 11-30 of the introductory\u00a0chapter for today’s scripture. There are notes and cross references linked as well, thanks to the USCCB.<\/p>\n

Sirach 1:11-30<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

FEAR OF THE LORD IS WISDOM*<\/sup><\/a><\/h4>\n

11\u00a0<\/span>The fear of the Lord*<\/sup><\/a> is glory and exultation,<\/em><\/p>\n

gladness and a festive crown.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

12\u00a0<\/span>The fear of the Lord rejoices the heart,<\/em><\/p>\n

giving gladness, joy, and long life.\u2020<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

13\u00a0<\/span>Those who fear the Lord will be happy at the end,<\/em><\/p>\n

even on the day of death they will be blessed.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

14\u00a0<\/span>The beginning of wisdom is to fear the Lord;<\/em><\/p>\n

she is created with the faithful in the womb.d<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

15\u00a0<\/span>With the godly she was created from of old,<\/em><\/p>\n

and with their descendants she will keep faith.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

16\u00a0<\/span>The fullness of wisdom is to fear the Lord;<\/em><\/p>\n

she inebriates them with her fruits.e<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

17\u00a0<\/span>Their entire house she fills with choice foods,<\/em><\/p>\n

their granaries with her produce.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

18\u00a0<\/span>The crown of wisdom is the fear of the Lord,<\/em><\/p>\n

flowering with peace and perfect health.\u2020<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

19\u00a0<\/span>Knowledge and full understanding she rains down;<\/em><\/p>\n

she heightens the glory of those who possess her.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

20\u00a0T<\/span>he root of wisdom is to fear the Lord;<\/em><\/p>\n

her branches are long life.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

21\u00a0<\/span>The fear of the Lord drives away sins;<\/em><\/p>\n

where it abides it turns back all anger.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

22\u00a0<\/span>Unjust anger can never be justified;<\/em><\/p>\n

anger pulls a person to utter ruin.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

23\u00a0<\/span>*<\/sup><\/a> Until the right time, the patient remain calm,<\/em><\/p>\n

then cheerfulness comes back to them.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

24\u00a0<\/span>Until the right time they hold back their words;<\/em><\/p>\n

then the lips of many will tell of their good sense.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

25\u00a0<\/span>Among wisdom\u2019s treasures is the model for knowledge;<\/em><\/p>\n

but godliness is an abomination to the sinner.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

26\u00a0<\/span>If you desire wisdom, keep the commandments,<\/em><\/p>\n

and the Lord will bestow her upon you;<\/em><\/p>\n

27\u00a0<\/span>For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and discipline;<\/em><\/p>\n

faithfulness and humility are his delight.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

28\u00a0<\/span>Do not disobey the fear of the Lord,*<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

do not approach it with duplicity of heart.f<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

29\u00a0<\/span>Do not be a hypocrite before others;<\/em><\/p>\n

over your lips keep watch.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

30\u00a0<\/span>Do not exalt yourself lest you fall<\/em><\/p>\n

and bring dishonor upon yourself;<\/em><\/p>\n

For then the Lord will reveal your secrets<\/em><\/p>\n

and cast you down in the midst of the assembly.<\/em><\/p>\n

Because you did not approach the fear of the Lord,<\/em><\/p>\n
